Recipe: How to Make Proja
Serbian food is delicious and offer diverse traditional specialities to meet different tastes but proja is definitely the one you must try. Have you tried it yet? If not, it is a perfect time to give it a go with our simple recepie.
Ingredients you would need for Proja:
- 1 cup of cornmeal
- 1 cup of plain flower
- 1 cup of plain yogurt
- 1 cup of sparkling water
- 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- Optional: 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese or chopped spinach for added flavor
Instructions:

Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Grease a baking dish or line it with baking paper.

Mix the Dry Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal/flower, salt, and baking powder. If you’re adding feta cheese or spinach, mix them in now.

Prepare the Wet Ingredients:
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, yogurt, sparkling water, and vegetable oil until smooth.

Combine Everything:
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing well until you get a thick, even batter.

Pour the Batter:
- Pour the batter into your prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Bake:
- Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve:
- Let the proja cool slightly before cutting it into squares. Serve warm or at room temperature.
